I am a big advocate of setting up rules for life, of discovering core values. Of, basically, creating the foundations for everything else.
It's just easier to keep going, to keep just vibing, once you have your moral compass somewhat declared. You don't have to worry about every decision in the moment. There's no need to always check yourself. If you're built thoroughly, most things won't shake you down.
Of course, your compass will never perfectly align with the compasses of others. And it doesn't have to (with a few important exceptions). But, once it's there, even in the most fragile form, things are easier.
Build your compass; live a saner, cooler, more calm life.
